Here are some pictures of where the bar may be placed on your back when doing squats. High Bar Squats (aka "Olympic Squats") In the first picture, the bar is placed high on the traps. Your chest should be out, back muscles flexed, and elbows rotated down and forward. The head should be upright. Because the bar is higher and further away from your center of gravity, it will require a more upright position to keep the bar from pulling you forward. Low Bar Squats (aka "Power Squats") The second picture shows a lower postion for the bar. The bar will be resting on the rear delts. The chest should be out, back muscles tense, and elbows rotated down and forward. The head should be upright. Because the bar is closer to your center of gravity, more body lean and a wider stance is common. Sorry for the shirtlessness... I thought it would show the bar positioning better...
