I've gotten different answers, so I'm asking it here. Do you really NEED protein supplements? Don't most people (even athletes) get enough protein in their diet to gain?
If you use protein supps, what kind do you use?
Thanx!

It depends on what your goals are. In my experience using a protein supp along with a good diet helped me gain weight. They also helped with getting significant calories when time was short or I was too lazy to cook. It is the best thing for me to take before a workout instead of any thing else (i.e. energy/carb drink).

I think age and condition plays a large part in that decision as well. If you are young and lean or just starting then I think a good multi vitamin and a-lot of food is the way to go for the first six-eight months. I think once you've got some weight on and strength built then you want to supplement with protein. I personally think that what you would get out of the protein at the start wouldn't cover the cost of a quality protein. If you are currently lifting and have been for a while, I would be using a powder. It helps when you have been working all day and then lifting at night. ( or what ever your schedule is) Just my thoughts on the subject.

Johnny and I talked about this briefly yesterday. And I checked into it a little.
I've read as a general rule, athletes should get 2 grams/1kg of bodyweight. So, about .9 grams/lb. For me, that would be about 180 grams/day.
A steak or hamburger has about 20-30grams of protein, so unless you just drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of protein throughout the day, I would think it'd be tough to get enough without a supplement...
Johnny, you live on a high-protein diet most of the time. How many grams of protein do you think you get a day?

If you use protein supps, what kind do you use? Thanx! Yes, even though you get enough in your Diet. There is nothing wrong in with adding 20+ more grams of Protein to your Diet. I take Optimum Nutrition's 100% whey Protein or WPI Substance New & Improved Grape flavor and chocolate flavor for the ON.
